Sixth form learners recently took part in the Future of News workshop delivered by The Guardian Foundation. The session offered a hands-on look at how news is created today and how it might evolve in the future.

Rather than sitting and listening, learners were actively involved throughout the day. Working in small groups, they explored ideas around digital news and designed their own news app, thinking about layout, features and how people engage with stories. Teams then presented their ideas, building confidence and communication skills along the way.

The workshop also highlighted how much collaboration goes into producing news. Learners worked with peers they may not usually speak to, sharing ideas, problem-solving together and learning the value of teamwork.

Learners spoke positively about the experience. Gloria described it as “better than any workshop I’ve ever been to”, while Kieran said, “My experience was 10 out of 10. I learnt a lot and enjoyed the teamwork. There’s a lot more teamwork and effort in the news than I thought.”

Chanel also enjoyed the creative side of the session, saying she “really enjoyed the UX design part”, and Marley shared that the workshop “broadened my view on the news.”

The day gave learners a chance to develop practical skills, think creatively and see how different roles come together behind the scenes. Opportunities like this help build confidence and open minds to future pathways in media, technology and beyond.
