The BTEC National Extended diploma in software engineering is a 13-unit course designed to enhance student skills and knowledge in the discipline of software engineering. Students explore best practices for developing software, building websites and modelling data. They also explore the impact of software in organisations. The aim is to challenge the students to consider the entire life cycle of software development as a crucial, essential and rewarding discipline.

  • Is this course for you?

    The Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT is an advanced technical qualification that will expand your skills, and help prepare you for a successful and rewarding career in information technology and computing. The equivalent of 3 A Levels, this course can open up a world of possibilities, from gaining direct employment in the IT sector, to helping you progress on to Higher Education or an Apprenticeship

    This course is designed to deepen your understanding of information technology as a whole, through compulsory modules such as communication and employability skills for IT, and computer systems. You will then be able to develop your knowledge and skills in a variety of IT-based subjects, to increase your specialisation and improve your employability.

  • What entry qualifications will you need?

    You will need a Grade 4 or above in English or Maths, with a minimum Grade 3 in the other. You will also need at least three other GCSEs at Grade 4. If you do have a Grade 3 in English or Maths, you will re-take this GCSE as part of your study programme. 

  • How will you be assessed?

    You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as presentations, workplace assessment, practical demonstration, report writing, group discussion and question and answer tests.

    You will create a personal portfolio based upon your coursework which will also be assessed.

  • Where can this course take you?

    This course can lead to employment in a wide variety of IT, hardware and software development roles, including games designer, software developer, software programmer, system developer, technical support and web development. It also provides a well-established route into a variety of specialist higher education courses in this sector, including undergraduate and foundation degrees.
