Behind every steel pan lesson at South Bank University Academy is an experienced musician with a lifelong passion for music.
Ms James, who teaches Steel Pan at SBUA, is a composer, steel band conductor and solo steel pan performer. She began composing at just nine years old and taught herself to read music, developing a career that now spans performance, composition and music education.
This weekend (24–26 July), Ms James will be featured as part of the Southbank Centre's Weekend Takeover, celebrating 75 years of steel pan in the UK. Bringing together performers and educators from across the country, the event recognises the rich history and cultural significance of steel pan music.
Describing the opportunity as an "extreme honour", Ms James is proud to be part of a celebration that shines a spotlight on an instrument and community she has dedicated so much of her life to.
At SBUA, however, her greatest passion is helping young people discover music for themselves.
"Steel pan is such a joyful instrument. I love seeing students grow in confidence and discover something new about themselves through music."
Her lessons encourage students to build musical skills while developing confidence, creativity and teamwork—qualities that extend far beyond the classroom.
