On Friday 1st May, South Bank University Academy held its fifth Future Pathways Day, a cornerstone of our careers and personal development programme. The day was designed to help students explore future education routes, careers and life skills, while making clear connections between learning in school and opportunities beyond the classroom. From cultural institutions and colleges to employers and inspirational speakers, every year group took part in tailored activities to support informed decision‑making and raised aspirations.
Year 8 – Documentary Challenge at the Imperial War Museum
Year 8 students visited the Imperial War Museum, London, where they took part in an engaging Documentary Challenge workshop. Working collaboratively, students explored historic artefacts and stories, learning how museums use evidence to tell powerful narratives. They developed skills in research, scripting, filming and critical thinking, while gaining insight into creative careers such as journalism, filmmaking and museum education.
Student feedback:
“We loved working like real documentary makers – it made history feel alive.”
“It helped me see how storytelling and careers in media actually work.”

Year 9 – Exploring Further Education at LSBTC
Year 9 students visited London South Bank Technical College (LSBTC) for an informative and inspiring day focused on post‑16 pathways. The programme included a careers talk, campus tour, and clear guidance on apprenticeships and T Levels. Students also took part in subject taster workshops in Film, Health and Social Care, Construction and Esports, giving them practical insight into vocational study and future careers.
Student feedback:
“The campus felt really grown up and helped me think about what I want to do next.”
“I didn’t realise how many options there are after GCSEs.”

Year 10 – Skills, Science and Inspiration
Year 10 experienced a diverse and memorable programme onsite. Students took part in a Wild Science workshop, handling a fascinating range of animals including insects, scorpions and a Royal Python, linking biology learning to careers in science, education and conservation. They also completed sessions in basic first aid, digital wellbeing, and explored careers in sport.
The day concluded with an inspiring talk from Danny Shittu, former professional footballer. Danny enjoyed a successful career playing for clubs including Millwall, Queens Park Rangers and Watford, was capped internationally by Nigeria, and has since transitioned into ambassadorial and mentoring work. He spoke honestly about resilience, discipline, setbacks and life beyond professional sport, offering powerful messages about transferable skills and personal responsibility.
Student feedback:
“The animals were amazing – I didn’t know science could lead to so many careers.”
“Danny Shittu’s talk really motivated me to work hard for my goals.”

Year 11 – Focused GCSE Preparation
Year 11 students spent the day strengthening their readiness for the upcoming GCSE examinations. They took part in walking talking mock exams delivered by the English department, alongside targeted Maths intervention sessions. The focus was on confidence, exam technique and identifying final areas for improvement, ensuring students feel supported and prepared at this crucial stage.
Student feedback:
“It really helped calm my nerves and showed me exactly what I need to focus on.”
Year 12 – Skills for the Future and Sector Pathways
Year 12 students participated in a rich programme focused on employability, sustainability and progression. Workshops included personal finance, and using social media and AI to raise ecological awareness. The Gardening Club officially began work on its biodiversity project, aimed at increasing wildlife and green spaces across the school site.
Students also attended an inspiring careers presentation in horticulture and environmental industries, delivered by Jonathan Matheson (Head of Education and Spadebearer, The Worshipful Company of Gardeners) and Matt O’Connor (Managing Director of John O’Conner (Grounds Maintenance) Ltd and Co‑Chair, Schools Outreach). This new partnership will be developed over the coming months and promises to provide students with exceptional opportunities, including mentoring and industry insight.

“Learning about money and real careers made everything feel more relevant.”
“It was great to speak to professionals who genuinely want to support students.”

The Future Pathways Programme at SBUA
The Future Pathways Programme at South Bank University Academy is designed to ensure all students are informed, inspired and prepared for their next steps. Through carefully planned experiences from Year 7 to Year 13, the programme develops awareness of careers, builds essential life skills, and connects students with employers, further education and real‑world opportunities. Events such as Future Pathways Day play a vital role in helping students see what is possible and how they can achieve their ambitions.
We are extremely proud of our students’ engagement and would like to thank all partners, staff and visitors who made the day such a success.
