As part of National Careers Week, we are celebrating the journeys of students who have explored their career options and taken confident steps towards their future.

Year 13 student Shamira is a great example of how engaging with opportunities and careers guidance can lead to exciting outcomes.

Through support from South Bank University Academy and our partnership with Construction Youth Trust (CYT), Shamira was able to take part in several work experience placements. These experiences allowed her to gain valuable insight into different roles and industries, helping her understand what type of career path would suit her best.

Reflecting on her journey, Shamira shared that the hands-on experience she gained during her work placements played a key role in shaping her decision to pursue a degree apprenticeship.

Her dedication and preparation have paid off. Shamira has successfully secured a degree apprenticeship with Maze as a Project Controller in the construction industry. This pathway will allow her to gain practical experience while studying towards a degree qualification.

Shamira also encourages younger students to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

“My advice would be to attend as many workshops as you can and take every opportunity available to you.”

Her story is a great reminder of the importance of exploring different pathways and engaging with careers education — something that National Careers Week aims to promote across schools and colleges nationwide.

We are incredibly proud of Shamira and wish her every success in this exciting next step.
