Students Presenting

A new Chess Club has launched in Sixth Form, bringing together strategy, competition and a growing community of players.

The idea came from students Erfan and Becklins, who noticed more people getting into chess recently and wanted to create a space where everyone could play and enjoy it together.

The club’s first session kicked off last week with a fast-paced tournament format. Players rotated across boards, taking on new opponents each round in a mix of focused matches and friendly rivalry. From experienced players to those trying it for the first time, there was a strong sense of energy and engagement throughout.

For those involved, the appeal of chess is simple. “We just enjoy the challenge of thinking ahead, and it’s nice seeing yourself improve each time you play.” That mindset was clear during the session, with students fully focused, learning as they went and getting more confident with each game.

Running every Thursday, the club offers a space to switch off from lessons while still developing valuable skills such as problem-solving, focus and strategic thinking. It is also open to everyone. “Just give it a try. You don’t have to be experienced, anyone can join.”

Looking ahead, there are plans to grow the club further, introduce more tournaments and build a strong community around it. “We want more people to get involved and hopefully make it something really big.”

For those considering sixth form, this is a glimpse into what the experience can offer. Alongside academic study, there is space to explore interests, take initiative and be part of something shaped by students themselves.
